CBSE School Lists 3 Strategies for Studying Vocabulary

You'll need to learn and study vocabulary words no matter what grade you're in or what class you're taking. You'll probably have more vocabulary quizzes in English or Spanish class. Still, you'll also need to study strategies for biology (mitosis, meiosis), history (diaspora, humanism), psychology (cognitive dissonance, cerebellum), and other subjects.

There's no getting around the fact that vocabulary is the common factor in all of your classes, says an English medium CBSE school in South Kolkata

Having good vocabulary study strategies is one of the effective ways of improving in all of your classes throughout the school year.

Here are three strategies to ace your vocabulary.

Make Use of the Scaling Method

The scaling technique (also known as a semantic gradient) causes you to connect a new word to words you already know in varying degrees. Keep in mind that the only way to learn further information is to connect it to what we already know.

The scaling technique has three steps, which I explain in detail and with examples here, but in general, the steps are as follows:

  • Choose a word from your vocabulary list that you want to learn and then come up with an opposing word.
  • On opposite ends of a vertical line, write the original word and its opposite word. This is how your scale will be built.
  • Fill in the gaps between each word with different new words of varying meaning to complete your scale. Consider your scale to be a continuum.

However, according to one of the top CBSE schools in Kolkata, the scaling technique only works for words with antonyms (opposites); it does not apply to all vocabulary.

Apply the Frayer Model

The Frayer Model is essentially a graphic organizer with four boxes (a 22 grid) and the vocabulary word in the middle. You must fill in one of the following four boxes: definition, facts/characteristics, examples, or non-examples.

This strategy works because it forces you to consider a vocabulary word from various perspectives, which is necessary if we are to learn the word truly, says one of the best CBSE schools in South Kolkata.

Study from Both Directions

Another effective strategy for learning vocabulary is to study the words in both forward and backward directions.

If you're learning the word amino acid, for example, you should be able to generate the definition while looking at the word and the word while looking at the definition.
